19-story building for the university’s data sciences headquarters would be the neighborhood’s latest new project

Boston University wants to replace a parking lot at the corner of Commonwealth Avenue and Granby Street in the Kenmore Square area with a 19-story, 350,000-square-foot tower intended to house a data sciences center.

The building would have a five-story, 20,500-square-foot podium with 14 floors on top, according to a letter of intent filed with the Boston Planning and Development Agency and first reported by the Boston Business Journal’s Catherine Carlock.

The tower at 645-665 Commonwealth Avenue would also be the latest project in busy, busy Kenmore.

Perhaps the most prominent development planned or underway in the neighborhood is Related Beal’s move to revamp and/or construct several buildings, including 660 Beacon Street, which has propped up the famed Citgo sign for decades. There are also plans for a pair of new hotels in Kenmore Square.
