General Electric will officially break ground on its 2.4-acre headquarters in Boston’s Fort Point on May 8. Gov. Charlie Baker and Mayor Marty Walsh are expected to be the guests of honor. The three-building complex will involve the company spending about $200 million to renovate two existing warehouses on Necco Court and construct a 12-story addition with a dramatic solar veil. The corporate campus will include what GE has dubbed “maker space” for employees, tech startups, students (both university and high school), and locals; a community work lounge; space for conclaves and presentations, never mind ample laboratories; and an employee cafeteria. The whole thing is expected to open by the end of 2018.
