Tags: Privately funded route had been scheduled to set sail in fall 2018
The privately funded ferry service from the Seaport District to near North Station that was scheduled to launch in the fall of 2018 is now expected to launch in early 2019, according to its backers.
Recall that the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority pitched the route as a way to ease congestion between the North Station area and the Seaport—congestion that only seems to be worsening as major developments in each advance. A key piece of the pitch was that private companies in the Seaport would fund everything.
That is still the case—sponsors include Vertex, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and the Fallon Company—though some firms apparently need more time to finalize their shares of the funding. That is one reason for the launch delay. The other is that a dock at Lovejoy Wharf near North Station will not be ready until the end of 2018.
Stay tuned. Not only is the exact launch date to be determined, but so are factors such as how many seats on the ferries will be open to the general public (as opposed to employees of the sponsoring companies) and what the fares will be.
