Destroyer attacked in 2000

The U.S.S. Cole is scheduled to dock at Black Falcon Pier in South Boston at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 15, according to the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council, which organizes the neighborhood’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

It will remain in port during the holiday weekend.

An October 2000 attack on the Cole off the coast of Yemen killed 17 sailors and wounded 39 others. Al-Qaeda was behind the attack.

“Our parade on the 18th isn’t just a parade to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, but to celebrate Evacuation Day,” David Falvey, the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council’s commander, said in a statement. “It’s meant to honor the service of the men and women of the U.S. military. When you think about the sacrifice that the U.S. military has made in the war on terror, the U.S.S. Cole comes right to mind in terms of the loss of men and women of this country and their mission to continue to serve the United States.”

The council is asking that those who come out to welcome the destroyer bring small American flags.
